Council throws its support behind Penrith’s Gathering event

Penrith Town Council has agreed to provide a contribution of £4,000 to support The Gathering, a free day of music, performance and family activity being staged by Penrith Business Improvement District (BID) in the town centre on Saturday 24 October 2026.

The Gathering has been organised at short notice by Penrith BID with local businesses, community organisations and members of the Penrith Arts and Culture Group following the cancellation of this year’s Winter Droving. The event will give residents and visitors a lively programme to enjoy while encouraging footfall and activity across the town centre.

Music and spoken word performances at the Bandstand will begin the day, with circus skills, acrobats, stilt walkers and live bands at Mansion House car park. Roaming performers and outdoor family activities will help connect the different venues, including events already planned at St Andrew’s Church and Penrith Playhouse. Potfest in the Pens has also extended its free bus service so visitors can travel into the town centre.

The £4,000 contribution from Penrith Town Council’s Community Grant Fund will help to keep the event free and accessible.

Cllr Val Bowen, Penrith Town Council Chair and Penrith Mayor, said:

“The Gathering is a fantastic example of local organisations coming together quickly for the benefit of the people of Penrith. The event programme will give people of all ages plenty to enjoy and help keep the town centre busy and welcoming throughout the day.

“We are pleased to support Penrith BID and its community partners in making the event free to attend. It is a strong partnership response that will benefit residents, visitors and local businesses.”
